PROGRAMME

BIOGRAPHIES

The Rubber Stamp Ensemble is named for the enormous collection of rubber stamps that I inherited from my father’s aunt, Freya Zabitsky, when she passed in 2011. As a writer and rubberstamper, Freya spent decades collecting and using these enchanting and artful objects to engage with a global community of artists known as the Mail Art network. Now, I use her collection to create graphic scores which are interpreted through real-time performance by a rotating ensemble of improvising musicians.

Over the past 4 years, this project has grown into a deeply meaningful work of research into the life and art of my great-aunt Freya herself, which in turn has opened a portal into the history and practice of Mail Art and related movements such as Fluxus and the Eternal Network.

Consequently, the project has evolved into an intermedia work in 3 parts: an album by the ensemble, a short film titled 2268 Stamps, created in collaboration with filmaker-poet Emma Cosgrove, and a Mail Art Kit created in collaboration with visual artist Andes A. Beaulé which includes a zine, archival documents and other ephemera.
