Exploration poétique de l’espace post-soviétique, « Extinction » est un film sur le passage des frontières à l’intérieur et autour de la Transnistrie (république moldave du Dniestr). Nichée entre la Moldavie et l’Ukraine, la région est une bombe à retardement potentielle qui menace de perturber davantage la géopolitique en Europe de l’Est. (L’armée russe reste présente en Transnistrie à la frontière occidentale de l’Ukraine). Le film suit Kolya, un ressortissant transnistrien autoproclamé, alors qu’il franchit à multiple reprises les postes de contrôle, erre dans les ruines post-soviétiques et rencontre des personnages mystérieux qui le régalent d’anecdotes russes. Les fragments du film forment un Patchwork éclectique et entraînent le spectateur dans l’imaginaire collectif de l’Union soviétique. Le film commente la récente position politique de Vladimir Poutine (« guerre sans guerre, occupation sans occupation »), tout en explorant simultanément la notion de « frontière comme méthode » élaborée par Sandro Mezzadra et Brett Neilson.

A poetic exploration of post-Soviet space. « Extinction » is a film about border crossings in and around Transnistria (Moldova’s Dniester Republic). Nestled between Moldova and Ukraine, the region is a ticking bomb that threatens to further disrupt geopolitics in Eastern Europe (the Russian army maintains a presence in Transnistria on the western border of Ukraine). The film follows Kolya, a self-proclaimed Transnistrian national, as he repeatedly passes through checkpoints, wanders through post-Soviet ruins and meets mysterious characters who share anecdotes about Russia with him. The fragmented nature of the film makes for an eclectic patchwork and guides the viewer into the collective imagination of the Soviet Union. The film comments on Vladimir Putin’s recent political stance (« war without war, occupation without occupation »), while simultaneously exploring the notion of « border as method » elaborated by Sandro Mezzadra and Brett Neilson.
