Spectacular Optical souligne la parution de Truth & Soul: The Robert Downey Sr. Reader avec trois soirées consacrées aux films de l’inclassable cinéaste américain Robert Downey, Sr. Chaque projection sera présentée par les coéditeur·rice·s de l’ouvrage, Kier-La Janisse et Clint Enns.
Réunissant de nouveaux essais signés par 23 spécialistes, critiques, archivistes, historiens de la musique et chroniqueurs de la culture populaire, ainsi qu’une sélection de textes d’archives, Truth & Soul se penche sur l’héritage culturel de l’œuvre excentrique, provocatrice et souvent saisissante de Downey. L’ouvrage examine la manière dont ses films abordent des questions de race, de classe sociale, de consumérisme et de politique sexuelle, tout en repoussant les conventions de la comédie et du bon goût.
Cette série de trois films témoigne de l’étonnante diversité de la carrière de Downey. Elle s’ouvre avec le parfait film d’été, Hugo Pool, une comédie romantique étonnamment tendre qui aborde sans détour la réalité de la vie avec la sclérose latérale amyotrophique (SLA). Elle se poursuit avec America, sa satire médiatique anarchique des années 1980, encore trop peu connue, et se conclut avec Chafed Elbows, le succès underground hilarant qui a révélé l’auteur en 1966.

Un film en images fixes complètement déjanté sur un homme en plein « effondrement annuel du mois de novembre ». Le film nous plonge dans la scène underground new-yorkaise des années 1960, peuplée d’artistes dégénérés, de cinéastes indépendants désespérés, de petits escrocs, d’excentriques et de renifleurs compulsifs de chaussettes sales. Blagues d’inceste, psychothérapie absurde, prétention artistique, confusion sexuelle et cinéma sans budget s’entrechoquent dans un déluge de gags pince-sans-rire et de non-sens surréalistes. Fauché, offensant et d’une inventivité inépuisable.

Robert Downey Sr. était un cinéaste, acteur, scénariste et directeur de la photographie américain, surtout connu pour avoir été l’un des pionniers du cinéma indépendant et contre-culturel dans les années 1960 et 1970.
Kier-La Janisse est scénariste et productrice de cinéma, responsable des acquisitions chez Severin Films et présidente de Spectacular Optical Media. Elle est l’auteure de *Cockfight: A Fable of Failure* (2024), *House of Psychotic Women: An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films* (2012/2022) et *A Violent Professional: The Films of Luciano Rossi (2007). Elle a également participé à la rédaction de nombreux ouvrages, notamment *Truth & Soul: A Robert Downey Sr. Reader* (2025), *Warped & Faded: Weird Wednesday and the Birth of the American Genre Film Archive* (2021) et *Satanic Panic: Pop-Cultural Paranoia in the 1980s* (2015). Elle a écrit, réalisé et produit le documentaire primé *Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror* (2021) et est la créatrice de la série de histoires de fantômes de Noël *The Haunted Season*, pour laquelle elle a réalisé son premier film de fiction, *The Occupant of the Room* (2025).

Spectacular Optical celebrates the release of Truth & Soul: The Robert Downey Sr. Reader with three nights of films by the singular American filmmaker Robert Downey Sr. Each screening will be introduced by the book’s editors, Kier-La Janisse and Clint Enns.
Bringing together new essays by 23 scholars, critics, archivists, music historians, and pop-culture chroniclers alongside a selection of archival writings, Truth & Soul examines the cultural legacy of Downey’s eccentric, provocative, and often startling body of work. The collection considers how his films intersect with race, class, consumerism, gender politics, and the shifting boundaries of comedy and good taste.
The three-film series reflects the remarkable breadth of Downey’s career. It begins with the perfect summer movie, Hugo Pool, a surprisingly tender romantic comedy that confronts the realities of living with ALS; continues with America, his under-seen and anarchic 1980s media satire; and concludes with the early hit Chafed Elbows, his hilarious 1966 underground breakthrough.

A wildly funny still-image film about a man suffering through his “annual November breakdown.” Take a plunge into the 1960s New York underground scene populated by degenerate artists, desperate independent filmmakers, hustlers, eccentrics, and compulsive dirty-sock sniffers. Incest jokes, absurd psychotherapy, artistic pretension, sexual confusion, and no-budget filmmaking collide in a barrage of deadpan gags and surreal non sequiturs. Scrappy, offensive, and relentlessly inventive.

Robert Downey Sr. was an American filmmaker, actor, writer, and cinematographer best known as a pioneer of independent and countercultural cinema in the 1960s and 1970s.
Kier-La Janisse is a film writer and producer, acquisitions executive for Severin Films and president of Spectacular Optical Media. She is the author of Cockfight: A Fable of Failure (2024), House of Psychotic Women: An Autobiographical Topography of Female Neurosis in Horror and Exploitation Films (2012/2022) and A Violent Professional: The Films of Luciano Rossi (2007) and has been an editor on numerous books including Truth & Soul: A Robert Downey Sr. Reader (2025), Warped & Faded: Weird Wednesday and the Birth of the American Genre Film Archive (2021) and Satanic Panic: Pop-Cultural Paranoia in the 1980s (2015). She wrote, directed and produced the award-winning documentary Woodlands Dark and Days Bewitched: A History of Folk Horror (2021) and is the creator of Christmas ghost story series The Haunted Season for which she made her first narrative film, The Occupant of the Room (2025).
Clint Enns is a visual artist, writer, and curator living in Tiohtià:ke / Montréal.
